Understanding Maryland's Primary System

Do I have to affiliate with a political party?

No, you do not. If you do not select a political party on your voter registration application, you will be "unaffiliated" with any political party. This means that you will generally not be able to vote in party primary elections, but you will be able to vote in any nonpartisan primary elections held in your jurisdiction, such as a primary election to select nominees for the board of education.

Can I vote in the Democratic Primary if I'm unaffiliated?

No. Maryland has a closed primary system. To vote in the Democratic Primary on June 23, 2026, you must be registered as a Democrat. If you want to vote for Austin Dyches, make sure your party affiliation is set to "Democratic" before the registration deadline.

How do I change my party affiliation?

You can change your party affiliation by updating your voter registration. You can do this online at the Maryland State Board of Elections website, by mail, or in person at your local board of elections office. The change must be made by the voter registration deadline (June 2, 2026) to take effect for the primary.

Who can register to vote in Maryland?

To register to vote in Maryland, you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be a Maryland resident
  • Be at least 16 years old (you must be 18 by the date of the general election to vote)
  • Not be under guardianship for mental disability
  • Not have been convicted of a felony, or if you have, you have completed serving a court-ordered sentence of imprisonment
  • Not have been convicted of buying or selling votes

What do I need to register?

To register online, you will need your Maryland driver's license or ID card number. If you don't have one, you can register by mail or in person using the last four digits of your Social Security number.

Can I register on Election Day?

Yes! Maryland offers same-day voter registration during early voting and on Election Day. You can register and vote at the same time at an early voting center or your assigned Election Day polling place. Bring proof of residency (such as a utility bill, bank statement, or government document showing your name and current address).
